I’ve started reading Dr Russ Harris’ The Happiness Trap and something I’ve put in place right away is singing those negative thoughts.
Harris suggests that when you have an unhelpful thought, you should repeat it to the tune of a song. This makes it less serious and allows you to see the thought as just a bunch of words (lyrics) rather than a set truth.
When I was at the beach yesterday, I thought to myself ‘I don’t deserve this’, which is something I usually dwell on and it depresses me further. I recognised this as an unhelpful thought, so decided to sing it quietly to myself to the tune of ‘Happy birthday’.
I don’t deserve this, I don’t
I don’t deserve this, I don’t
I don’t deserve this, don’t deserve this
I don’t deserve this, I don’t.
It made me laugh a little. It certainly took the seriousness away from it and stopped me from focusing on it as a fact.
Let’s see what the rest of the book has to offer.
